The Town of Kingston Business District is closer to Onteora Lake than the planned 850 Route 28 project. And Pickerel Pond has no easy access - only able-bodied trekers can access it walking miles from the Onteora Lake parking lot or off Morey Hill Road. Pickerel Pond is a very recent addition to the Bluestone Forest (added AFTER 850 Route 28 project was proposed to the Town of Kingston planning board). In sum - the Bluestone Forest and Onteora Lake are URBAN PARKS, not 'wilderness parks' as some contend. The 850 Route 28 is and has been zoned for commercial use, and signficant developments/commerical operations surrounds the Forest already. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: What opponents are seeking to do is REMOVE existing commercial zones in order to grow an expanding park. Is this part of the Town of Kingston commprehensive plan? Endless parks with little tax base? and few jobs? Has this 'expanding parklands' plan ever presented and discussed by the Town of Kingston community

BEFORE AND AFTER 20th Century Mining at 850 Route 28

Image
As you can see in these compare and contrast aerial photos - the first taken in 1958 and the second taken in 1978, that the 850 Route 28 site was severely damaged from open rock quarrying and mining.  This site will greatly benefit from the plans for 850 by capturing all storm water runoff capture into two large filtration ponds, and improvising overall water quality from the site's runoff.  And the site will be put back on the tax rolls for something needed locally - infrastructure for local roads and bridges.

Helping Kingston School District

Image
When 850 Route 28 is built, a significant portion of its estimated $363,000 per year tax revenue contribution will go towards the Kingston school district. This will help to educate and care for our children, and offset the need to raise local taxes. NIMBY IN ACTION - THE HARD TRUTH BEHIND 850 ROUTE 28

Image
We have heard this claim before - 'why don't you build in a more appropriate area?' However, the reality is that NIMBY is everywhere - there are currently no sites in Ulster that wouldn't attract some opposition. There is now too much financial gain for these organizations to resist calls to 'shut down' private businesses. They use controversy to 'gin up outrage and call for donations for their organizations' - its a clear pattern. There are no development sites in Ulster that environmental groups like CMK/WLC/OSI will commit ahead of time to not oppose for development. There is no pre-planning with county or local governments to ensure investor/developers won't get blindsided by environmentalist attacks. So at any time these and other groups will attack anything proposed at any time - there is no attempt to preclude senseless lawsuits, oppositions and delays. The 850 Route 28 project is a perfect example of this predicament - its an abandoned open

Promises Made But Not Kept By Environmental Activist Groups

Image
(first published August 2020) In the middle of a depression, it is sad to see some folks still all too eager to deny others getting decent jobs. Anti jobs, anti local community, anti essential services (whose jobs are significantly paid with tax revenue from local businesses). And should the coalition of Catskill Mountainkeeper, Woodstock Land Conservancy, and Open Space Institute prevail in stopping the planned 850 Route 28 project, they will 'gleefully' 'own' their reputation as job-and-revenue killers, and be even more emboldened to continue their business-hostile campaign unabated.   These groups have promised that 'only-a-green-passive-recreation' approach to business in the 4 county Catskill region is 'permissible' in their view. But they haven't produced nearly the jobs promised over the last 10 years - a meager 2,000 PART TIME/SEASONAL, and some full time, jobs in the Catskills exist that are remotely related to recreation/hospitality, as per

850 Route 28 VIDEO of location

Image
Take a look at the current site where 850 Route 28 plans to build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmmLIXhPCNM The 850 Route 28 proposed project will create pre-cast concrete infrastructure for use in local aging roads and bridges. It will be situated within a formerly abandoned open rock quarry in the Town of Kingston. The existing forest cover and surrounding hills will conceal the site from view on Route 28 and adjacent properties. It will create many new opportunities for local residents and surrounding areas, add significant new local tax revenue, and remediate an unproductive mine with watershed and other improvements. The development will use innovative 'green' materials and techniques in construction and operation, and plans to seek LEED 'green' certification.
